Hello and welcome to our February newsletter. This month we're promoting the internet as an active learning resource. YouTube is a great way to view lean practices and the application of tools. It's a rich resource of material for in-house lean trainers, however there a lot of boring videos to sift through before you find the gems. This month we introduce a Boeing video that demonstrates the principle of Takt Time (i.e. manufacturing at the customer demand rate) very well.
To get a real sense of how Boeing interprets lean please click on the title link for an interesting Youtube video. At the time the video was made the 737 line was moving at 2 inches per minute. The video, which is 7.53 minutes long, shows may examples of lean best practice. Look and learn! (You might wish to reduce the sound on your PC before viewing the video - there is no voiceover however the music is loud).
The good people at SPC for Excel (an Excel data manipulation add-on) have just released version 4.0 of their software. Whilst Minitab is a data processing powerhouse for black belts and design engineers, SPC for Excel will perform many of the data manipulation functions required by managers and green belts. In keeping with our video theme, the SPC for Excel site contains video demos of all the software functions. Take a look at the title link to see a Pareto chart being constructed.
Those of you studying for six sigma certification might be interested in trying your luck with the Quality America test green belt questions. There are 6 questions in all and the answers are immediate. It's a great way to boost your six sigma knowledge.
